Ok well it's official; I am truly a Peace Corps volunteer. I moved to my post about two and a half weeks ago. So I am living on my own now; im no longer with my house family.
And since I have arrived here I have not had internet. Or actually my internet was BARELY working, just enough so that I kept trying to use it but not enough to get any work done, ugh. Anyways my month of internet just ran out so it doesnt work at all, which has forced me to go to internet cafe, which i probably should have just done to begin with.
Anyways what has happened since I last posted....(oh gees)
Well the last time I posted I was still in training. I was still living with my host family. Shortly after that we received our bicycles! (I actually havent rode my bike here in Bafoussam yet, cause my school is at the bottom of the super big hill and it is often slippery.) After we got our bikes EVERYONE wanted to "pedaler". Well I didnt let my student ride my bike, but I let my host siblings.
Privat actually did pretty well despite of the fact that the bicycle was way too big for him.
Mike was just a little too small or too nervous to really get going. Maybe a little bit of the both.
While I was staying with my host family, they bought a dining room table. Before we were eating at the coffee table. My host mother was very proud of the table. It was really nice too. All the furniture here is made my real carpenters by hand. There is no IKEA.
During the training we had a "model school", which was basically summer school put on by the PC trainees so that we could get some experience in a "real" Cameroonian class room before we got to post. They (our trainers) did a really good job at organizing it. We modeled every thing from the billet d'entree (the entry pass for students showing up late to school) to the amical (the teachers social group). One of the things that we did was clubs. I helped organize a running club for the students. Two other trainees helped me, Andrea and Karen. This is Andrea on the left and our captain Clemence in the middle.
Our club organized a fun run which was about 2.7 km. Our club members made posters and fliers. The club did a great job of advertising; i think they posted around 100 fliers. We had a great turnout, over 50 participants. I also need to thank our fellow PC trainees who help (which was almost all the Education volunteers and many of the small business volunteers).

One evening the trainees had a "middle school dance" party. We played music from our (various) middle school eras and tried to reenacted the awkwardness of the dance. It was fun and afterwards Jenny, Ben and I went to fish hut for a late night fish dinner. These fish stands are EVERYWHERE. As soon as it gets dark the streets (especially around the bars) are filled with ladies selling grilled fish. The fish always comes with pimente (hot sauce) and raw onions and you can optionally order "baton de manioc", which is this glue type stick thing which has very little favor and Im not really sure why they eat it (empty calories I suppose). Well now a little about my post. I live in the bottom floor of a nice little house. The landlady lives next door with her family. They are very kind people. They worry a lot about what I am eating. I personally dont like preparing food all the time, so I have been eating a lot of sandwiches and salads and fruit. It's just takes a lot of time to cook for one person. The family invites me for dinner frequently. I tried to tell them that they really do not need to feed me, but I think they think they need to. So Im trying to walk a fine line between accepting to often or rejecting them to often, since i dont want to appear rude.
I have finished my first week of classes. Only three days of actual teaching, because I dont have class on Mondays and yesterday (friday) was the start of Ramadan. I teach the equivalent of 6th grade, 7th, 8th, and sophomores in high school. I teach a total of 6 different class of computers and one class of English. The bigger classes have maybe 60 or more students. My smallest class only had about 20. But this was just the first week so more kids are bound to show up next week. I didnt have a roster either so I dont know my exact numbers yet. (And I didnt have my English book until Monday, the first day of classes...)
My school is really in a village, Djunang. It is about a 40 minute walk for me from my house. If I walk the other way it's about a 30 minute walk to the city of Bafoussam, which is one of the larger cities in Cameroon.
You can see where my internet stopped working, because I dont have any picture uploaded of my house or town yet.
Ok finally I have heard that some people were asking if there was anyway they could help also by maybe donating something to the school or something like that. And they answer it YES! but just wait a little bit. :D One of the Peace Corps' goals is to start projects that are sustainable and needed by the community. Therefore they require that there is community support for a project, which means any project needs to be funded at least one fourth by the community. Also since I have just started here I can't really say what is the biggest need. To make a long story short, if you are willing to support a project at my school then I will definitely call on you in the future. Stay tuned!
