Summer Break!

Summer break has come and (almost) gone, and I haven't yet updated you all on what I've been up to. In theory, as a Peace Corps Volunteer we don't have summer break. We should find a small project in the community to occupy out time.
Since I have been here (and even in the States), I've had the desire to work with the homeless. Homelessness is a problem everywhere, but here in Cameroon things are especially bad. From what I have observed, the majority of homeless in Cameroon are severely mentally handicapped. Most people just call them "les fous", e.i. "the crazy". You can imagine that the situation can be very sad indeed. So before school got out I started to look for NGOs who work with the homeless. I started to look in Bafoussam to no avail. I widened my search, asking colleagues, friends, anyone I could imagine. Nothing. So in the mean time, a friend of mine asked me if I would be willing to teach computers during the summer. I agreed and taught for two months, June and July. At the moment, working with the homeless is on hold, since I still haven't found an organization.
My friend who found me the job teaching computers during the summer was a French volunteer who was teaching in another school in the same town. She was here with the Catholic Church and was here in Cameroon for one year; unfortunately she has already gone back to France. The job was teaching computers at a "community center" owned by the Catholic Church. Besides the computer classes that I was giving there was also dance classes and sewing classes. The classes were VERY different from teaching at the high school where I teach during the school year. For comparison there was about the same number of working computers (12); however all of the computers worked well and were "nice" (Pentium 4). The classes were much smaller around 15 instead of 80. There was a projector (something I don't have at school). The students were voluntary, opposed to being forced to be in class. They were all ages, opposed to all young children or teenagers. Most of time the students didn't have to share a computer, opposed to three or four students sharing one computer. I had four hours a week with the students in the computer lab, opposed to 20 or 30 minutes max for each student. There was absolutely no pressure to teach from a curriculum, opposed to supposedly teaching from a government curriculum which hasn't changed in over 7 years and should have changed before it even came out. No paperwork AT ALL, opposed to spending half on my time as a secretary from the 1940s, using that they call "pen and paper" (I remember learning about this in school, but they never taught us how to actually use such crude instruments). All of these wonderful advantages meant unfortunately that I had to plan more than 5 minutes worth of material each day, HA. We actually got to pivot tables in Excel, pretty advanced if you ask me.
My good friend Sarah Ing is flying in today. She will spend two weeks here. We will tour around Cameroon: Douala, Kribi, Limbe, Bafoussam, Bamenda, Bafia. see map below.
